2020 vision

It’s been such a challenging year for everybody, but at least our children have gotten to play baseball this summer.

If you have any photos to share from this season, please send them to bpvyouthbaseball@gmail.com.

Team photos are appreciated. “Off-the-field” moments with friends are great. Action pictures are fantastic.

We’ll archive the best at BPVBaseball.com and you might see a familiar face attached to announcements on the website!

Fall Ball reminder

BPV’s fall ball program runs six weekends from Aug. 29-Oct. 11.

Games are on the weekend — Saturday’s at the Crow Creek Park 4-Plex for all but the oldest kids, and Sunday’s at Devils Glen Park for the 14-and-over crowd.

There are no games Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 5-7). Practice time is available during the weeknights and will be up to the individual teams and the schedules of their families.

The deadline for Online registration is Sunday, Aug. 23, so schedules and teams can be finalized. Sign-up is available at https://active.leagueone.com/Olr/pages/welcome.aspx?clubid=14196.

Registration is $50. Financial assistance is available by filling out an application located at BPVBaseball.com. Or request a financial aid form from tappasteve@gmail.com.

Summer BPV teams encouraged, but not required, to stay together. Groups of friends are encouraged. If there are 2-3 or more kids/coaches wishing to play together, please let us know on your registration or send an email to tappasteve@gmail.com.

Fall Ball is intended to be a great bridge to the next level next season! The emphasis is not on winning, but rather developing skills and experience by playing as much extra baseball as possible, and there are a number of special rules used.

Birdies for BPV

This summer’s John Deere Classic was canceled because of COVID-19 restrictions around events and public gatherings in Illinois.

However, the local PGA Tour stop still is offering the tournament’s standard-setting Birdies for Charity campaign. The BPV was among the 543 organizations last year benefitting from the annual fundraiser netting $13.8 million for local charity

The tournament runs the BFC, so there are no administrative costs — thus each charity receives 100-percent of all the funds pledged and collected on that charity’s behalf.

The JDC and title sponsor John Deere pledged the 2020 charity participants also will receive at least a five-percent bonus, as usual, despite this year’s shutdown.

Instead of distributing pledge cards this year, charity’s are encouraged to have donors make their pledges electronically to reduce the number of paper touch points normally involved in the process.

To make a tax deductible donation, visit: https://birdiesforcharity.com/donate. Be sure to use BPV’s charity identification number, 1834.

Each penny pledge received will be converted to a flat $20 donation, and all donors will be eligible for a random drawing for the traditional prizes, including the grand prize of a 2-year lease on a Lexus NX sports utility vehicle.

For more information about the Birdies for Charity program visit https://birdiesforcharity.com/ or https://birdiesforcharity.com/donor.

The BPV uses all funds raised tu support the program, which is offered regardless of financial need. The BPV also helps provide baseball facility improvements, such as lights, scoreboards, and batting cage nets. BPV also awards college scholarships to our best and brightest program graduates from our local high schools.

Tyler Hurd Memorial

Long-time BPV player Tyler Hurd was tragically found dead June 24 on the morning of his 17th birthday, during a campout sleep over with friends, hours after celebrating a victory in the Seniors Division.

The Bettendorf High School sophomore was a victim of natural causes, passing in his sleep.

Tyler’s family is dedicated to remembering him and his time growing up on our local diamonds with a lasting memorial.

To help support the effort, you may donate to the GoFundMe cause at https://gf.me/u/yh9ha4.

Even if you can’t make a small donation, sharing the fundraiser via social media to help spread the word is very much appreciated.
